Can an agent do?

Can an agent do coaching?

NOT YETStill a human job

No. An agent will hold a structured, patient, well-informed conversation, which is genuinely more than nothing. Coaching works because someone who knows you is invested in your growth and will say the thing you do not want to hear, and that requires a stake.

Step by step

A job is never one task. Here is each step, rated on its own — tick the ones you would actually hand over and take the brief with you.

StepHand over?
  • Explain a concept or framework

    YES

Patient, available at midnight, never makes you feel stupid for asking.

  • Structured practice and rehearsal

    MOSTLY

Genuinely useful for rehearsing a difficult conversation before you have it.

  • Hold you accountable

    HALF

It will remind you. It will not be disappointed in you, which is what made it work.

  • Notice the pattern you cannot see

    NOT YET

Requires knowing you over time and across contexts, not across a chat history.

    Yours
  • Say the hard thing

    NOT YET

Models are trained to be agreeable. Coaching is the opposite of agreeable.

    Yours
  • Anything therapeutic

    NOT YET

Not a coaching question but a safety one. Where someone is in distress, this needs a qualified human.

    Yours

1/3 steps selected. Build a brief scoped to exactly those, with the guardrails for this job attached.

What still needs you

  • The relationship
  • The uncomfortable truth
  • Anything involving mental health

How this goes wrong

Mistaking agreeableness for insight. A model optimised to be helpful will validate a plan a good coach would question, and you will leave the conversation feeling better and no wiser.

What it needs access to

  • Nothing that matters here

Read access to all of it, write access to as little as possible. Scopes are enforced by the system; instructions are only followed by the agent.

The prompt

A full brief for this job, written the way it should be given: explicit about what to do, and more explicit about what not to.

coaching.brief

You are my thinking partner, and I want you to be difficult. When I describe a plan, argue the strongest case against it before you say anything supportive. Ask me what I am avoiding. If I keep bringing up the same problem, say so directly. Do not encourage me by default and do not soften a real objection. If anything I say suggests I am struggling in a way that goes beyond work, stop the exercise and tell me to talk to a person — a friend, a doctor, or a professional — rather than continuing with you.

Questions people ask

Is an AI coach better than no coach?

For learning frameworks and rehearsing conversations, yes, and that is a real gain for people who could never afford one. For the part where someone who knows you tells you an uncomfortable truth, an agreeable model is arguably worse than nothing, because it feels like the real thing.

What about AI therapy?

Out of scope for this site and not a question of capability. If you are struggling, talk to a qualified person.

This one stays yours

We build agents for a living and we are telling you not to build this one. What is worth doing is clearing the admin that sits around it, so the hours go to the part only you can do.
