Can an agent do data entry?
Yes. This is the least ambiguous answer on the site. Moving information from one place to another — reading documents, extracting fields, putting them in a system — is fully agent work and has been for a while.

Step by step
A job is never one task. Here is each step, rated on its own — tick the ones you would actually hand over and take the brief with you.
Read any document format
YESPDF, scan, photo, email body, handwriting, a table in an image. No templates needed.
Extract structured fields
YESIncluding from a layout it has never seen, which is what killed template-based OCR.
Validate and cross-check
YESChecks the total adds up and the VAT number is real before writing anything.
Write into the system
YESVia API, or by driving the interface when there is no API.
Flag what it cannot read
YESThe whole difference between reliable and dangerous. Insist on it.

Fix a broken source process
NOT YETIf the data arrives wrong, an agent will faithfully enter wrong data faster.
5/5 steps selected. Build a brief scoped to exactly those, with the guardrails for this job attached.
What still needs you
- Fixing the upstream process
- Deciding what happens to genuinely ambiguous records
- Spot-checking
How this goes wrong
No confidence threshold. An agent that must produce a value will produce one, and a plausible invented field is far more damaging than a blank one. Require it to leave gaps and flag them.
What it needs access to
- Email or shared folder
- Target system
- Validation sources
- Spreadsheets
Read access to all of it, write access to as little as possible. Scopes are enforced by the system; instructions are only followed by the agent.
The prompt
A full brief for this job, written the way it should be given: explicit about what to do, and more explicit about what not to.
You are my data entry agent. Watch the shared inbox and Drive folder. For each document: identify the type, extract the fields in the schema below, and validate — arithmetic must add up, dates must be plausible, reference numbers must match an existing record. Write validated records into [system]. If any field is unclear, leave it blank and add the record to a review queue with a note on what you could not read. Never guess a value. Never write a record where more than two fields are unclear. Daily, send me the review queue and a count of what you processed.
Questions people ask
How accurate is it compared to a human?
On documents it can read clearly, more accurate than a person at hour six of a shift. The meaningful comparison is not accuracy but honesty: a good setup flags uncertainty, and a tired human quietly types their best guess.
What if the system has no API?
It can drive the browser interface the way a person would. This is slower and more fragile than an API and it still works, which is what matters for the legacy systems most of this work lives in.
Does this eliminate data entry jobs?
It eliminates the typing, which is most of the role as defined. The work that remains — resolving the exceptions and fixing the upstream causes — is a genuinely better job and there is less of it.
Want this one actually running?
The brief above is the easy half. The other half is connecting it to Email or shared folder and Target system, holding it inside the boundaries on this page, and having somewhere the exceptions land where you will actually see them. That is what Ogento does.
