Can an agent do financial reporting?

MOSTLYAgent does it, you sign off

Mostly. An agent assembles the numbers, builds the pack and writes a first-draft commentary that is genuinely useful. What it cannot do is know which number the board is actually worried about this quarter.

Step by step

A job is never one task. Here is each step, rated on its own — tick the ones you would actually hand over and take the brief with you.

StepHand over?
  • Pull and consolidate data

    YES

Ledger, billing, CRM and the spreadsheet nobody has migrated. It reads all of them.

  • Build the standard pack

    YES

Same format every month, correct arithmetic, no broken links.

  • Variance analysis

    MOSTLY

It finds what moved and quantifies it well. Sometimes it explains the wrong cause confidently.

  • Write the commentary

    MOSTLY

A solid first draft. Your edits are about emphasis, not facts.

  • Forecasting

    HALF

Extrapolation, yes. Knowing the big customer is wobbling, no — unless you tell it.

  • Deciding what to present

    NOT YET

The framing of a board pack is a political act. Keep it.

    Yours

2/5 steps selected. Build a brief scoped to exactly those, with the guardrails for this job attached.

What still needs you

  • What the story is
  • What to highlight and what to contextualise
  • Anything going to investors

How this goes wrong

A confident commentary attributing a revenue dip to seasonality when it was actually one customer churning. The arithmetic is right and the sentence is wrong, which is worse than no sentence.

What it needs access to

  • Accounting system
  • Billing or Stripe
  • CRM
  • Spreadsheets
  • Slides or Docs

Read access to all of it, write access to as little as possible. Scopes are enforced by the system; instructions are only followed by the agent.

The prompt

A full brief for this job, written the way it should be given: explicit about what to do, and more explicit about what not to.

financial-reporting.brief

You are my management accountant. On working day three of each month, build the management pack: P&L versus budget, balance sheet, cash flow, and a KPI page covering ARR, churn, gross margin and runway. Pull from Xero, Stripe and HubSpot. For every line that moved more than 10% versus last month or budget, investigate the cause in the underlying transactions and state it — and where you are inferring rather than confirming, say so explicitly. Draft a one-page commentary in plain English. Send it to me only. Never distribute externally.

Questions people ask

Can it replace a financial controller?

It replaces the assembly, which is most of the calendar time, and none of the judgement, which is most of the value. Controllers who adopt it stop spending three days building the pack and start spending three days on what it says.

Want the part that works actually running?

The brief above is the easy half. The other half is connecting it to Accounting system and Billing or Stripe, holding it inside the boundaries on this page, and having somewhere the exceptions land where you will actually see them. That is what Ogento does.
