Can an agent do sales?

HALFThe grind yes, the judgement no

Half, and the halves are unequal. An agent does the research, the outreach, the follow-up and the admin — roughly two-thirds of a salesperson’s week. It does not do discovery, negotiation, or the part where someone decides to trust you.

Step by step

A job is never one task. Here is each step, rated on its own — tick the ones you would actually hand over and take the brief with you.

StepHand over?
  • Build the target list

    YES

Finds accounts matching your best-customer pattern rather than a firmographic filter you guessed at.

  • Research an account

    YES

Reads their site, filings, job ads and news, and tells you why they might care right now.

  • Write the first touch

    MOSTLY

Better than most cold email because it actually read something. Still needs your voice set once.

  • Follow up relentlessly

    YES

The single highest-value thing to delegate. Humans stop at touch two; agents do not get discouraged.

  • Book the meeting

    YES

Handles the calendar ping-pong, timezone, reschedule and reminder.

  • Run discovery

    NOT YET

Hearing what someone will not say directly is the job. An agent hears the words only.

    Yours
  • Negotiate and close

    NOT YET

Concessions carry commercial consequence and require someone with authority in the room.

    Yours
  • Keep the CRM honest

    YES

From the actual emails, calls and calendar, not from what a rep remembers on Friday.

5/6 steps selected. Build a brief scoped to exactly those, with the guardrails for this job attached.

What still needs you

  • Discovery conversations
  • Negotiation
  • Pricing exceptions
  • Any relationship worth more than the deal in front of you

How this goes wrong

Volume without judgement. An agent that can send 500 personalised emails a day will burn your domain and your market in a month if you point it at a badly chosen list. The constraint should be the list, not the sending capacity.

What it needs access to

  • CRM
  • Email
  • Calendar
  • LinkedIn
  • Call recorder
  • Enrichment data

Read access to all of it, write access to as little as possible. Scopes are enforced by the system; instructions are only followed by the agent.

The prompt

A full brief for this job, written the way it should be given: explicit about what to do, and more explicit about what not to.

sales.brief

You are my SDR. Each week, build a list of 40 accounts matching this pattern: [ICP]. For each, research their site, recent news, and open job ads, and write one sentence on why they might care about us now — if you cannot find a real reason, drop the account rather than inventing one. Draft a first-touch email in my voice using that reason, under 120 words, one clear ask. Show me the batch before anything sends. Follow up four times over three weeks, varying the angle. Book meetings straight into my calendar with 30 minutes of buffer. Log everything in HubSpot. Never negotiate, never quote a price, never promise a feature.

Questions people ask

Can an agent close deals?

It can close transactional, low-consideration deals where the buyer has already decided and needs a path. It cannot close anything where the buyer needs to be convinced, because being convinced by software is not a thing people do with budget at stake.

Does AI-written cold email still work?

Personalised-at-scale outreach works when the personalisation is real research and fails when it is a merge field wearing a costume. Buyers now recognise the second instantly, which has made the bar higher rather than lower.

Should I replace my SDR team with agents?

The better move is to give each rep an agent and raise the quality bar rather than the volume. Teams that cut headcount and kept the volume target usually end up with a burned domain and a market that ignores them.

Want the part that works actually running?

The brief above is the easy half. The other half is connecting it to CRM and Email, holding it inside the boundaries on this page, and having somewhere the exceptions land where you will actually see them. That is what Ogento does.
