Can an agent do?

Can an agent do SEO?

MOSTLYAgent does it, you sign off

Mostly. Technical audits, internal linking, schema, briefs and refreshes are agent work now, and tedious enough that they usually go undone. What an agent cannot manufacture is the authority, originality and relationships that decide who actually ranks.

Step by step

A job is never one task. Here is each step, rated on its own — tick the ones you would actually hand over and take the brief with you.

StepHand over?
  • Technical audit

    YES

Crawls, finds the broken canonicals and orphan pages, and tells you which ones cost you money.

  • Keyword and intent research

    YES

Clusters by intent rather than by string similarity, which is where most keyword lists go wrong.

  • Internal linking

    YES

The highest-return SEO job nobody does, because doing it by hand across 400 pages is miserable.

  • Schema markup

    YES

Correct, validated, and maintained as pages change.

  • Content briefs

    YES

Serious briefs from the actual SERP, better than most agencies produce.

  • Writing the content

    HALF

Competent and forgettable by default. Ranking now requires something only you know.

  • Refreshing decaying pages

    YES

Spots the decline, diagnoses it, drafts the fix. Excellent use of an agent.

  • Earning links

    NOT YET

Links come from people who think you are worth citing. That is a relationship, not a task.

    Yours
  • Deciding what to be known for

    NOT YET

Positioning is upstream of SEO and cannot be derived from a keyword tool.

    Yours

6/7 steps selected. Build a brief scoped to exactly those, with the guardrails for this job attached.

What still needs you

  • Positioning
  • Genuine expertise in the content
  • Relationships that produce links
  • Deciding what not to publish

How this goes wrong

Publishing volume. An agent can produce forty competent articles a month, and a site of forty competent articles about nothing in particular is exactly what recent search updates were built to demote.

What it needs access to

  • Search Console
  • Analytics
  • Crawler
  • CMS
  • Keyword data
  • Git or site access

Read access to all of it, write access to as little as possible. Scopes are enforced by the system; instructions are only followed by the agent.

The prompt

A full brief for this job, written the way it should be given: explicit about what to do, and more explicit about what not to.

seo.brief

You are my SEO agent. Weekly: crawl the site and report technical issues ranked by traffic impact, not by count. Check Search Console for pages that lost more than 20% of impressions in 28 days, diagnose why, and draft the fix. Propose internal links for any page with fewer than three inbound links, using descriptive anchor text — show me the list before applying. Validate schema on all template types. For any keyword cluster I approve, write a brief: intent, what the top five actually cover, what they all miss, the angle only we can take because of our data or experience, and the questions to answer. Do not publish anything. Do not do outreach for links.

Questions people ask

Will AI-written content rank?

Google judges the page, not the author, but its bar for helpfulness now filters out exactly what an unguided model produces: fluent summaries of what already ranks. Content grounded in your own data, customers or experience ranks; content that could have been written by anyone does not.

Can an agent replace an SEO agency?

It replaces the execution retainer — audits, briefs, linking, schema — which is most of what most retainers actually deliver. It does not replace a strategist who knows which fight is worth picking, and that person is now worth more, not less.

What about GEO and AI search?

The same work with different emphasis: answer the question in the first forty words, structure content so a passage can be lifted whole, keep facts specific and citable, and maintain clean schema. Agents are good at all four, which is why they are worth pointing at this now.

Want the part that works actually running?

The brief above is the easy half. The other half is connecting it to Search Console and Analytics, holding it inside the boundaries on this page, and having somewhere the exceptions land where you will actually see them. That is what Ogento does.
